Crested HB Week 2017

This week of September features some of the best birding in Batumi. At this time of the year, early migrants are still easy to find, while most of the later ones are already passing in good numbers. Moreover, some species reach their peak now: booted eagle, black kite, levant sparrowhawk, pallid harrier. This is also the case for what is probably Batumi's best species: the crested honey buzzard. Originating from east of Altai mountains in Siberia, up to 40 individuals are recorded annually in Batumi. Identification is not always straighforward and  hybrids occur.

All around Batumi, you find a fantastic diversity of migrants. Some of the more common species are: broad-billed and terek sandpiper, black-winged pratincole, gull-billed tern, scops owl, wryneck, thrush nightingale, short-toed lark green warbler, Caucasian chiffchaff, golden oriole, red-throated pipit, citrine wagtail, red-breasted flycatcher, lesser grey shrike, ortolan bunting.
